Our theme for this year’s Malaysia Night is “Home”. With all of us being miles away from our home, this year’s theme is sure to be one most of us will be able to relate to. Without giving too much away, this year’s play centres on a young man who was born in Malaysia but raised in the UK. He embarks on a journey back to his homeland to discover the truth about his past. Along the way, he meets an unforgettable cast of characters that show him what it means to be Malaysian by leading him through various exciting dances that imbue the traditional with a touch of modern.

Malaysia Night 2009 will be held on the 7th of February (Saturday) at the Belgrade Theatre in Coventry from 7pm (seating at 6.30pm) onwards. The tickets are on sale now and can be bought online via the Belgrade Theatre website http://www.belgrade.co.uk/site/scripts/show_details.php?showID=282 or through the Warwick Malaysian Students Association by email: warwickmalaysianight2009@gmail.com Dinner which will be a dinner buffet featuring a wide spread of Asian cuisine will be held at the MYO restaurant located close to the Belgrade Theatre. Anyway, the ticket categories and pricing are as follows:

  • Dinner Tickets (inclusive of admission to the show) : £17
  • Show Tickets (for university students) : £10
  • Show Tickets (MSA members price): £8

PLEASE NOTE that the Dinner Tickets and the £8 show tickets for MSA members are only available for sale through Warwick MSA and cannot be purchased via the Beglrade Theatre’s website.

To all the actors, actresses, dancers and of course the dikir barat team, keep up the good work! Make Malaysia Night 2009 a success!! To all the other members, it’s not too late to get involved! If you’re interested do let us know! *hint hint: there’s no such thing as “there are too many people in the dikir barat team”* ;p
To everyone else out there, I hope to see all of you guys on the 7th of February!

Nottingham Games 2008!

First of all, we do apologize for the extremely late report on this year’s Nottingham Games. We’ve been a lil’s busy lately what with all the Malaysia Night practices but we know that’s no excuse for slacking so we hope you all do forgive us… we’re trying our very best here! ;p

Anyway, the Warwick MSA contingent was up at ungodly hours (i.e. 6am) to catch the coach to Nottingham on the 8th of November. Footballers, netballers, basketballers, badminton players, snooker players, chess players and scrabble players all trudged onto the bus sleepy-eyed but by the time we reached Nottingham, we were all wide-eyed and determined to give it all our best and bring glory to Warwick MSA! Although it did rain intermittently throughout the day, I’m proud to say that the spirit of our members were not dampened. All the sportsmen and sportswomen of MSA were not going to let their prior training go to waste and we’re proud to say that each and everyone of them put up a good fight against their respective competitiors.

At the end of the day, we are very proud to say that Warwick MSA managed to get into the finals for Netball and clinch the 1st runner-up position! It was a heated game between Warwick Team A and Nottingham; the tension in the hall was high. We could see the weariness in the netballers but their eyes showed that they were determined to see the game through and could still go strong. Kudos to all the netball players! Aside from netball, for the first time, Warwick MSA also managed to make a name for ourselves in the chess arena; Joel who was one of the chess players managed to get a Bronze! As a bonus, Warwick MSA also managed to win the “Best Dressed Contingent” award because most of us were wearing red.

Warwick MSA would like to congratulate all the sportsmen and sportswomen for their efforts. We’re all very proud of you! We would also like to say a big thank you to the supporters; you guys rock!! Nottingham Games wouldn’t have been the same without your cheers and encouragement. Also, we would like to thank our Sports Officers Jackie and Anthony for their hard work in getting everyone together for Nottingham Games 2008.

Good work everybody!

Thus far…

Are you guys still alive and surviving? ;p we sure hope so because we have so many more plans ahead for you guys! So far, we’ve had a successful welcoming social with quite a huge turnout. The freshers looked well fit in with everyone else and i’m sure everybody enjoyed Kak Shidah’s homecooked nasi beriyani, currypuffs and popiahs!

We are also proud to announce that the Warwick MSA Executive Committee 2008/2009 is now complete! The elections which were held in last week together with the annual AGM was a competitive one with many first years running for the unfilled posts. The enthusiasm shown by the members is a good sign of things to come and we hope that everyone keeps this spirit up! (You’ll need it for all the looonng Mnight Practices! ;p ) We’d like to take this opportunity to congratulate the newly elected committee members! To see the full list of the Exec Committee 08/09 please proceed to ”the committee” tab)

Aside from that, the Mentor-Mentee program is also now up and running. A Mentor-mentee dinner will take place tonight at Nandos, Coventry in hopes of allowing the mentors to bond with their mentees and also for everyone elese to get to know each other better. So mentors, grab you mentees and drag them to Nandos! Don’t miss this opportunity to get to know them because you’ll never how much a helping hand makes a difference some times.

The Production Team Recruitment Drive for Warwick Malaysia Night 2009 was aslo conducted this week. Kudos to those who turned up for the interview. For you guys out there who were not able to make it for the recruitment drive, fret not! There are still positions up for grabs. All you need to do is email us and let us know which position you’re interested in and we will provide you with further details. You could also get in cotact with our Cultural Officers Jin or En Li for more information.

Next week, we’ll be having auditions for performers (musicians, actors/actresses, dancers etc.). An email will be sent out very shortly with more details so keep an eye out for that email! We welcome anyone who is interested in performing. Remember, it doesn’t matter if you’ve never had experience in performing! Just try out because you’ll never know what the future holds! (well.. not really anway :p)

Until next time!

Warwick MSA 08/09

Orientation 2008!

On the 23rd of August Warwick MSA held it’s first ever Orientation in Malaysia. The inaugural Orientation event was put together in hopes of bringing together the Malaysian seniors and the new freshers and getting to know each other a little better before making our way back to the UK.

After much running around and planning, Saturday came and the seniors waited eagerly for the new students to turn up. Unfortunately due to unforseen circumstances, there were a lot of last minute pull-outs on the new students’ side. However, this did not dampen anybody’s mood – the ice breaking games were carried out smoothly with everybody in teams doing a myriad of things like sifting through flour to look for clues and bursting balloons. A bit childish perhaps but everyone had fun embracing the little kid in them :) The freshers (as well as some seniors) were given a chance to learn some facts about the university in a short trivia session whilst some seniors got to show off their general knowledge (or lack thereof) of the university.

After the ice-breaking games came the main activity – MSA’s very own LRT Amazing Race! At the Taman Paramount LRT station which was the starting point, everyone (excluding a few game facilitators) were broken up into teams of 4. Each team was given a clue sheet containing extremely difficult riddles which would lead them to the next station of their destination once they figured out the answer. Needless to say, all the teams were cracking their skulls trying to decipher the clues, hoping on and off the LRT at numerous stations. After a tiring but fun adventure along the LRT Putra line, everyone retired for lunch at A & W next to the Asia Jaya Station which was the last station in the Race.

All in all, Orientation was a success! Everybody had loads of fun and that’s what matters. The MSA committee would like to thank everybody who came and participated in the activities. Also, we would like to thank those who were involved in the planning of the Orientation and those who helped plan the activities (especially the LRT Amazing Race).

Hope to see you guys soon in the UK!
