Some of you freshers might be confused regarding the structure of the MSA executive committee and elections i.e. How many cultural officers are there??? What is a constitutional amendment?? …Constitution? What is this, politics??
Let’s begin with the MSA constitution. The MSA Constitution binds the MSA to certain rulings and guidelines regarding certain procedures, including the the structure of the MSA Executive Committee. Every society in Warwick has a constitution.
I quote MSA’s constitution:
1.1. The Executive Committee shall comprise a President, Vice-President, Secretary, Treasurer, two Cultural Affairs Officers, two Sports Officers and five committee members.
This means that the structure of the current Exec are as follows:
President
Vice-president
Secretary
Treasurer
Cultural Officers x 2
Sports Officers x 2
Auxiliary Committee Members x 5
However, we have begun to find the existence of 5 auxiliary committee members with no designated jobscope other than to fill in the gaps rather redundant. This is why we are proposing to cut down the number of ACMs to four instead of five i.e. change the structure to:
President
Vice-president
Secretary
Treasurer
Cultural Officers x 2
Sports Officers x 2
Auxiliary Committee Members x4:
-Social Officer, Communications Officer, Freshers’ Rep x 2
However we cannot just implement this, as this is a constitutional matter, and we are bound to the old structure. We have to propose this change, called a constitutional amendment, at the AGM, and let members vote on whether they are agreeable to the amendment, and if they are (simple majority), run nominations as per the new structure at the same AGM.
Hence this is what we’re doing -we’re running nominations and a constitutional amendment proposal simultaneously.
I.e. if the amendment is approved we run with the new structure. If the amendment is rejected we will run wth the old structure.
This is why we have complicated things in the email e.g. ‘if the amendment is rejected the unsuccessful nominees of the four ACMs shall run to be the 5th ACM’
However, even if the amendment is rejected (i.e. we keep the 5 ACMs), we are still going to have the four ACM titles (Social Officer, Comms Officer, Freshers’ Reps), PLUS an extra ACM with a title we shall determine after the AGM.
i.e. EVEN IF we run with the OLD STRUCTURE, it will be:
President
Vice-president
Secretary
Treasurer
Cultural Officers x 2
Sports Officers x 2
Auxiliary Committee Members x5:
-Social Officer, Communications Officer, Freshers’ Rep x 2, (One more title)
Therefore, do not worry about your jobscopes changing if the amendment is not approved – whatever jobscope you’re running to be in for, if you win, will still remain the same.
As for what ‘completing the exec’ means-
Each academic year we have two elections. Half the committee i.e. the President, Vice-President, Secretary, Treasurer, one Cultural Officer and one Sports Officer will be elected at the END of the academic year (Term 2). This half-exec will function through the end of Term 3 and summer, while the rest of the positions are kept empty until the beginning of the following academic year, where the freshers come in and are allowed to run. Therefore we will always always have an exec made up of seniors AND freshers. Get it? (:
So yep we hope this clears up any doubts- any questions can be emailed to —-> warwickmsa@gmail.com.
P.s. hope you guys had fun at the social!
P.p.s. Jobscopes can also be found in the resources section.
